record into existing midi clip

Forums

Hello, is it possible to record into an existing MIDI clip rather than having to record into a new one? sometimes I want to add some notes or some controlls to a clip, and I have to do so by hand (edit the clip and use the piano roll) - which of course is limited

Recording directly into an existing clip is an old feature request that has been around for quite some time.

It also has seen several too many implementation trials which I confess didn't go nowhere near perfect. Yep, I did scrapped them all each time around. You know the meme, trial and error. It's just that there's been the same count for both sides :)

Anyway, you can always record into a new clip and then edit and merge the overlapping clips. It's a few steps more on the way, but that's the way I do it ;)

ok, the only annoying thing of this method is that many times I have to drag away the clip just to see the name of the one under it (I need it for the merge operation).

Could a "Merge all overlaying clips" feature be implemented?

Hi, I just realized another good potential use for this feature request: you could loop over a range and progressively add notes to a midi clip - that way you could program beats like you do in hydrogen and seq24, which is very fast and intuitive.

Have you had more trials and errors with this? :)

Also, for the workaround, how can I select overlapping clips? I can select them by Ctrl clicking them but that of course works only if they don't overlap.

re. loop over a range and progressively add notes to a midi clip
yes, i know that's one major key feature of the overdub process :) but...

re. Have you had more trials and errors with this?
yes, had a few more and somehow things have improved a bit, but got stuck on the undo/redo side of things: it's kind of broken and still not safe for the masses :)

re. how can I select overlapping clips?
aren't they selected anyway? i could swear the opposite is what's not that simple, like selecting just one of the overlapping clips, specially the one earlier/underneath :/ i'll take a closer look at this asap.

cheers

aren't they selected anyway?

nope, if I have two clips that overlap completely (i.e. they're the same length and start in the same place) and I click on them, only the top one gets selected...

oops. you probably selecting each clip by point and clicking on each, individually... have you tried with some other select mode (cf. Edit/Select Mode) like range or rectangular? yes you'll have to drag-select, but that's what i was assuming from the start (sorry, it's been my preferred way, anyway :)

hth.
cheers
