Recording directly into an existing clip is an old feature request that has been around for quite some time.
It also has seen several too many implementation trials which I confess didn't go nowhere near perfect. Yep, I did scrapped them all each time around. You know the meme, trial and error. It's just that there's been the same count for both sides :)
Anyway, you can always record into a new clip and then edit and merge the overlapping clips. It's a few steps more on the way, but that's the way I do it ;)
