painting is about creating new events, like throwing real paint onto a canvas (think Pollock:) -- fundamentally that is indeed equivalent to having a new layer, so to speak.
to edit existing events (the ones already placed hard, either from recording, hand insertion or painted before, it is no business for the pencil tool, yet.
i am sorry if i teased you in the wrong direction :)
again, the pencil tool can hardly serve to edit existing events--unless there's a strict and precise timing between the snap-to-grid and each target event, which is somewhat a side-effect from the MIDI spec--there cannot be two events of same type and channel at the same exact time.
anyhow, maybe it would be nice to give some constructive ideas on some effective free-hand editing as against to just paint new events around ;)
what you think?
cheers
