general speaking the answer is yes and no. :)

if you want to delete, you must select those events and just hit the damn button, whatever.

otoh, if what you really want is to override existing events, that is, while you move the mouse as in painting over canvas, then make sure the snap-to-beat (or is it to-grid?) is in effect and does apply to your likings and then, just go for the run.. woohoo
