A couple more things

Forums

A couple more things have cropped us this week (starting a new thread as I need to attach a file). Could you let me know on the below please?

1) What's the best way to select the edge of a clip when it overlaps with another one? In the attached screen, I'd like to adjust the right edge of the left clip and also fade it out (handle marked by red box), but it's "blocked" by the right clip. Is there any way to bring the left clip "forward", making its right edge and fade handle active? Even if I click on the left clip (in "Select clip" mode) the right clip still takes priority. I must be missing something obvious, but am not sure what

2) When you copy a clip containing "takes" to another track, the takes feature disappears (though you can extend the edge of the clip to get at the audio). Is this intentional?

Thanks as ever.

i'm afraid you just don't have access to an overlapped clip edges or fade handles when covered by a following clip. you can however do the changes manually on the Clip/Properties... dialog though.

yes, that's fully intentional--take information is kept only for the original recording track location; if you move, change or cut any of the folded clip-takes then all take state information is lost (but undo-able as usual).

cheers.

Ah, that's a shame. In that case, what's the best way to cross-fade? I can think of:

1) Enter values manually, as you mention (rather fiddly)
2) Use two tracks (losing the ability to switch between takes on one of them)

Are there any other ways to do this?

On a side note, it seems that when updating values in the Clip window, the OK button isn't activated upon making a change - you have to click in another box first. Should this be activated as soon as a change is made? That's what I expected, anyway.

    i'm afraid not :)

    the OK button is enabled as soon you commit your discrete manual changes on the time entry fields, by moving focus to another field (eg. click away or pressing the tab key) and the data is of course valid; you can also use the up/down spin-boxes for immediate increase/decrease and commit value at text cursor position.

and a hands down to your ever on going effort updating the great and (in)glorious qtractor wiki ...

your work in transcribing all these threads, impromptu rants and comments into intelligible user documentation is profoundly priceless, to say the least

holy thanks && appreciated
cheers

No problem at all on the wiki :-) FYI, I've now put in everything that seemed relevant from the old documentation, plus added anything I've learnt from you/discovered myself/read in various places, so it's in better shape than it was (at least for the features that I use). I'll continue to update it whenever I learn something new.

It's a small way to say thanks for your phenomenal efforts over the years (the Q stuff really is quite remarkable for the work of basically one person) and I hope it'll make things easier for other users, plus lessen the amount of questions you need to answer for people.

re. 1) What's the best way to select the edge of a clip when it overlaps with another one?

starting from today's git head master (qtractor v0.7.4.1+) you can do all the things you asked there plus a brand new one: introducing the long overdue Clip/Cross Fade menu command! ;)

test && tell.
cheers

That's absolutely great - thank you indeed :-)

It seems you just select either of the overlapping clips then choose Clip > Cross Fade, with the duration of the cross fade being determined by the length of the overlap. Is there anything else to be aware of?

Thanks again!
