The exported file (or any other audio file) would not play on my laptop until qtractor was closed! Must be that qtractor takes over the sound system, presumably because it switches to using JACK instead of ALSA?
exactly. it is JACK and not qtractor per se that takes over the sound device.
if you want to other players (audacity, vlc, browsers, etc.) get a chance at all, while JACK is in charge, please learn to use modern JACK2 with D-BUS enabled and let the PulseAudio JACK modules do the trick.
