only the modal dialog windows are closed via Esc and it's equivalent to the Cancel or Close button.
all other modeless windows and widgets, eg. the main tracks window and the MIDI clip editor aka piano-roll, the Esc key has this specific "escape" semantics as to cancel the current editing operation if any is in progress eg. drag, move, lasso, paste, etc.
having it to close the editor windows would be a major UI/UX change IMHO and that's not going to happen, sorry :)
