Alsa guitar effects?

Forums

Hi all..

I use qtractor in Ubuntu Studio and I love it.. But I only use Ubuntu Studio for music, I use Zubuntu for my day-to-day distro. Thing is, I often get the urge to pick up my electric guitar and have a quick twang, but to do that through my PC means re-booting into Ubuntu Studio so I can fire up jack..

So, my question is, is there a bit of software out there that I can use with the alsa setup in Zubuntu..? Does not have to be high quality or with loaded features, just to amplify my guitar would do nicely, every search I made comes up with jack driven software only..

hi, thanks

you may try some alsa-plugin or -bridge that let's you insert some LADSPA plugins (caps* and guitarix are some pretty nice ones here), whatever, but quite frankly, it's a dang PITA to make it right, let alone the time you'll get to even work first time, whether decently at all: you'll certainly need to deal with lots of esoteric command line hacks, editing some illusive configuration files, know asoundrc syntax by heart and what not... :)

but you should try making that zubuntu of yours (is that an alternate spell to Xubuntu or is it something I never heard of, til now?) to work with JACK2 at least...

you must know that a guitar player wants--rather demands--the lowest latency turnaround for live performance, and that, I must tell, you can only find to work reliably with JACK, or otherwise on a fine tuned system that would run JACK quite stable in the first place anyway...

so why ask for less when you can have more? :)
iow. what exactly is stopping you there?

cheers

Hi..

Thanks for the info and advice, and you are quite correct, I did mean Xubuntu.. Not really any point configuring my Xubuntu for low latency and then setting up jack and all the other tools, I have Ubuntu Studio working like a swiss clock for that and I use Xubuntu for other things.. Really wanted a quick tool for playing my guitar in Xubuntu and really dont want, or demand lowest latency for a quick twang.. Looks like I will have to dust off my little practice amp..! Poor neighbours..
