MIDI metronome usage

Forums

It seems the wiki doesn't have any info on the metronome so I'm planning to add this. First, however, I need to get it working myself :-)

The audio metronome is fine and I've found this old info for the MIDI metronome. I can hear sound when routing the MIDI Master Out/Dedicated Metronome bus to an external instance of fluidsynth-dssi, but can't hear anything when following your "You can also have it rendered through a DSSI, native VST or LV2 plugin inserted on the Master MIDI output bus". I've tried adding fluidsynth-dssi (and other synths) to this bus, but can't hear anything. Like the original poster, though, I can see the bus responding in the mixer. Clicking on "Send Test Note" in fluidsynth produces sound, so the plug-in itself appears to be OK. There's also no dedicated output on the MIDI Master Out bus, or dedicated MIDI metronome output in View -> Options, to complicate things.

I must be missing something but I'm not sure what. Any ideas?

when set to dedicated MIDI output bus/port it is meant that the the MIDI metronome events will get sent out through this extraordinary MIDI output port and won't get d to any internal MIDI track/bus plugin chain whatsoever.

that said, the MIDI metronome dedicated output port is mostly if not exclusively targeted to external MIDI instruments or sound-modules, including outboard equipment.

hth.

Yes, I do understand that and I don't have them enabled when trying to get sound out of fluidsynth on the Master Out bus. (I did have a dedicated output enabled to test the external instance of fluidsynth, as per the above.) To make this clear, I have:

View -> Options -> MIDI -> Enable MIDI metronome (on)
View -> Options -> MIDI -> Dedicated MIDI metronome output (off)
Metronome enabled in main view toolbar
MIDI Master Out bus: fluidsynth plugin with GM sf2 loaded; bus output set to Master, not Dedicated
I've also tried sending the MIDI metronome to various Channels, just in case, but no luck.

Is there anything else I need to do?

oh, yes... now i get it and reading around the code i must say that the MIDI metronome messages won't get through ever any plugin-chains whatsoever--they're always sent directly to (ALSA-)MIDI output ports, although you can see them blinking on the MIDI output bus mixer strip.

so i may have said some time ago that it was also fed to the MIDI master out plugin chain, now i realize i was wrong then. sorry for the mistake and for misleading you all the way since.

cheers
