sub/shell plugin support

zebralette has been very unstable under qtr git for me, both with the Steinberg headers and VeSTige. It is much more stable under Ardour 4 which can only use VeSTige. I have tried running qtr/zebralette under gdb w/ debug enabled but I don't get any backtraces when zebralette quickly and inevitably brings qtr to its knees.

The prob and the reason I've not logged this as a bug report (yet) is that zebralette isn't usable under qtr unless you opt-in to disabling the dummy plug-in scan. There is no such requirement under A4. This, combined with other comments you've made on LM makes me think you don't plan on officially supporting VST sub/shell plugins under Qtractor?

Dan,

please refrain to tell the world that I or qtractor are not "officially" supporting VST sub/shell plugins whatsoever just because that's dang not true.

you can read several threads on the LM fora where you'll see there's issues re the use of the vst plugin dummy scan, and for which you don't get to discover new sub/shell plugins. but that's NOT an issue to already loaded ones.

maybe tl;dr :/ you'd must realize that having the vst-dummy-scan turned off will get your qtractor sessions pretty unstable, provided you do the vst-scan at least once. if, for instance, you have one nasty VST plugin on the search path, and one example is u-he's Diva (but there are plenty more) you'll get a time-bomb ticking started... so, my suggestion is about the following: you know about some vst-shell plugins you like to insert onto your session. so be it. do that with vst-dummy-scan on. once those inserted, please save your session and turn the vst-dummy-scan back on. remember: problem only arises down-hill from vst plugin discovery. once you get your pretty session laid out, with all the vst sub/shell plugins you like around and ready to party then i'd say you won't need to vst-plugin discovery/scan ordeal any more. avoid it at all costs. you're now set to make some music, remember? all your sessions with vst sub/shell plugins will get up and loaded without issues thereafter, hopefully.

Good to hear qtr isn't shunning sub-plugins. I was getting quite concerned for a short while! :)

I've just quickly tested your recommendation and it seems to be a valid workaround. zebralette is the only sub-plugin I use currently so I just need to have a session thats empty except for having 1-track with zebralette loaded. If I want to use it on more than 1 track I can just copy it to additional tracks in the mixer. I'd prefer it if there was no need for the dummy plugin option but working round it isn't painful once you know how. Hopefuly this will fix the stability issues I've been having when using Zebra.

One prob fades only to be replaced by another of course. I'm sure qtr used to have red/green/grey status icons for all the cc channels in the automation menu? Were they removed? If so, how do I tell which tracks contain automation data now? Maybe this is a theme issue? I'm running the Cinnamon desktop under Arch.

sure is a theme issue: some widget styles don't show icons on menus, and gtk+ are one of them.

my favorite is "Plastique" (please go to View/Options.../Display/Custom Style theme)
