Vee One Suite 0.3.2 - One third bug-fix release

As they use to say--'round here at least--there's no second without a third. So there it goes, yet another batch for the Vee One Suite of old-school software instruments being thrown out to the wild. Usual suspects include synthv1, a polyphonic synthesizer, samplv1, a polyphonic sampler and drumkv1, a drum-kit sampler.

Same as before, they come in a duality of forms:

  • a pure stand-alone JACK client with JACK-session and both JACK MIDI and ALSA MIDI input support;
  • a LV2 instrument plugin.

Now, the (boring) bill of changes follows:

  • Pitch-bend, Modwheel and LFO Pitch range internal fixes.
  • LV2 State save flags now forced to be portable POD.
  • Sustain/damper pedal switch (MIDI CC#64) support added. (synthv1, samplv1)
  • Color palette hack on Qt5 dark themes. (TESTING)

All this are free, open-source Linux Audio software, distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2 or later.

Enjoy && Have fun!

Hello Rui,

impressive work, as always. But I really think you should presets into SynthV1.
Even the most hardcore sound-designer want to see what the synth can do, so they need examples and demo sounds. But more important, most users have no interest in designing their own sounds. Especially not from scratch. They start a synth and browse/choose a predefined 'instrument' to create music.
Presets also enable inexperienced but curious users to have multiple starting points for variations or examples how to get a certain sound.

check Jeremy's (aka. autostatic) ;)~ autostatic-synthv1-presets

cheers

Why not include them in your repository?

rncbc's picture

them in the source code repository?

yeah, good question

frankly, i remember to ask Jeremy for just that... something to do some deep utter procrastination i guess d'oh :)

anyway, you'll be always welcome to try and improve on them, if you like ;)

cheers

In the meanwhile the presets have been relicensed to a very strict, commercial-only license. They can be bought for a beer at LAC2013.

Hello Rui!
Is there a todo list? or complete list of features do you plan to implement for this instruments?
Or it's more "enlightenment" project?
I would like to see mute grouping (for drum instruments), note off and multilayer.
What you say? is there a chance?

rncbc's picture

yeah. maybe you remember these were coined as "the proto-toys"... :)

now,

1) mute-grouping is already there on drumkv1 (cf. Group knob): drum elements of the same group number do mute each other when triggered--i guess that's what you mean.

2) note-offs' also there for drumkv1; you either enable or disable note-off event recognition; when disabled, note-offs are simply ignored. is that it?

3) multilayers: sorry, not there yet. is this about velocity layers? may i ask you (very humbly) why is this so much requested? sure a (real) drummer may know best :)

cheers

Oh... Sorry, I missed that :) So many buttons :), sorry!!
And about multilayer, yes it is for velocity and feel of a real drum. Even if I play "electronic" music, I still need more flexible sound.
Try a real drummer snare roll midi sample with singlelayer and multilayered drum banks, it's a big difference! And not only for a drummer, multilayered bass, guitar, brass, piano sampler - it would be cool to. But I understand, it's to complicated for a proto-toy :)

Just FYI actually, I'm now banging on my $20 USB MIDI drumpad using drumkv1, a $35 Raspberry Pi and a $2 USB sound card. CPU is at 25% and this is with a 8ms system latency. One hell of a cheap, powerful, fully programmable drum synth!

Jeremy

The title says it all. Please go over your oscillator design with a good
view to the Nyquist frequency and its consequences.

yes of course i know the oscilattors are NOT of the bandlimited kind, so aliasing kicks in on the pulse and saw high notes. so what?

anyway, it's old-school digital, i never called it virtual analog or something :)

peace.
