I think this feature request was already discussed but it would really help me to change an arrangement without losing information (deleting) or hiding this information in the clip's menu (Gain).
Right click on a clip -> Clip -> Mute (can be checked and unchecked like "Loop Set") should 1.) remove it from the play list (preferred) or played with 0 volume (tricky with MIDI clips that contain MIDI CC) 2.) place an X (cross) over the clip so it's easy to detect that it's muted

Personally, I work around this scenario with these steps:
As long as we're talking about the potential awesomeness of muting things, I'd be a huge fan of being able to mute notes. Ideally, I'd be able to select a few notes and WHACK a handy keybinding. In that world, the notes would still remain but they'd be some different color making it obvious they are muted. Of course, the work-flow I described above works just as well for these experiments but it's a more common scenario I think in terms of quickly messing around with an impromptu idea because we don't always have a particular section defined as a clip. One other detail as to why the "duplicate first" work-flow doesn't lend itself as cleanly to this scenario is the care needed to ensure the duplicated clip is not linked before deleting the target notes. Again, unlinking is quick and easy but it's just a detail not to be overlooked.

ps. muting notes may be achieved by (MIDI clip >) Tools > Resize > Value = 0, which is undo/redo-able, but beware the last state is committed to session file on save and there won't be a way to recover to the original state.

LOL. Yea, I appreciate the tip about the resize but I'd never use that as it'd be non-obvious should I not look at a particular piece of work after a reasonable amount of time. Also, totally appreciate the warnings you provided about the state change.

the xclipmute branch is now live and kicking ;)
instead of the proposed cross "X" the muted state is shown as "[Mute]" on the clip title or label.

Thanks, Rui. Muting is such a great help, not only when arranging but also when splitting an audio clip to remove noise/pops. Muting the remaining part while editing the first part helps a lot finding the point when the noise/pops is cut off.
